Back in the 1870s whiskey was shipped by the barrel, and once delivered it would be decanted and, very often, would also be diluted and its quality tampered with. Wanting to ensure that bourbon could be enjoyed at a consistently and medicinally high quality, something that at that time was simply not guaranteed, pharmaceutical salesman George Garvin Brown became the first person to supply pure and unadulterated whiskey sealed in a glass bottle. To verify it as a spirit of fine quality, each bottle would proudly bear a label, hand signed to assure its authenticity with the pledge: “This is mine, I guarantee every drop.”
